Warm & Safe as Temperatures Drop
As temperatures continue to drop across our region, extreme cold becomes more than just uncomfortable. It can be dangerous, especially for individuals and families who are living outdoors or without stable housing.
At Hope Affordable Housing & Realty, we believe in community care, second chances, and making sure people have access to information that can help them stay safe during harsh weather conditions.
🧤 Why Cold Weather Is So Dangerous
When temperatures fall below freezing, the risk of:
Hypothermia
Frostbite
Respiratory illness
Heart strain
increases significantly. These risks are even higher for individuals sleeping outside, in vehicles, or in unheated spaces.
🧥 Tips to Stay Warm During Extreme Cold
1. Layer Clothing Properly
Wear multiple loose layers instead of one heavy coat.
Use thermal or moisture-wicking layers closest to the skin.
Cover exposed areas: hands, feet, ears, and face.
Even socks layered under socks can help retain heat.
2. Stay Dry
Wet clothing removes body heat quickly.
Change damp socks or clothing as soon as possible.
Avoid sitting or sleeping directly on cold or wet surfaces.
3. Insulate From the Ground
Cold ground pulls heat from the body.
Use cardboard, blankets, sleeping pads, or newspapers as insulation.
If possible, elevate yourself off concrete or metal surfaces.
4. Eat When You Can
Food fuels body heat.
Warm meals, soups, and high-calorie snacks help the body maintain warmth.
Drinking warm liquids can also help regulate body temperature.
5. Seek Warm Spaces
Whenever possible:
Visit warming centers, shelters, libraries, transit stations, or community centers.
Even short breaks indoors can prevent dangerous heat loss.
6. Watch for Warning Signs
Signs of hypothermia include:
Uncontrollable shivering
Slurred speech
Confusion or drowsiness
Weak pulse
If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, seek help immediately.
❤️ A Message to the Community
Cold weather reminds us how important compassion is. If you see someone outside during extreme temperatures:
Offer information about warming locations
Share gloves, socks, or blankets if you can
Check on elderly neighbors or vulnerable individuals. Small acts can save lives.
